HT/FT With No Clear Favourite: How All 9 Results Are Split
Strip out the clear favourites and the HT/FT grid flattens. Three results sit almost level at the top, and the draw at the break carries more weight than usual.

Most HT/FT thinking starts with a favourite: pick the stronger side, then ask when they take control. I wanted to know what happens when that anchor is missing. I filtered for matches where neither side was priced shorter than 2.30, which left 20,276 games across 22 European leagues.
The headline is that the top of the market becomes a three-way tie. Home/Home, Away/Away and Draw/Draw all land within a couple of points of each other, and Draw/Draw at 18.1% climbs well above its usual rate. These are the games where the hinge at half-time matters most, and they are the ones I study hardest for my half time/full time predictions page.
01Three results share the top when nobody is favoured
This is the full split of the 9 outcomes in evenly matched games. Home/Home leads at 19.7%, Away/Away follows at 19.4% and Draw/Draw is close behind at 18.1%. Below those sit the two late-winner results, Draw/Home at 13.4% and Draw/Away at 12.7%, and then a steep drop.
The bottom of the chart is just as useful. Home/Draw at 5.8% and Away/Draw at 5.9% show how rarely a half-time lead is pegged back in these games. The full reversals, Home/Away at 2.4% and Away/Home at 2.5%, are rarer still.

| 20,276 matches with no side shorter than 2.30 | |
|---|---|
| Home/Home | 19.7% |
| Away/Away | 19.4% |
| Draw/Draw | 18.1% |
| Draw/Home | 13.4% |
| Draw/Away | 12.7% |
| Away/Draw | 5.9% |
| Home/Draw | 5.8% |
| Away/Home | 2.5% |
| Home/Away | 2.4% |
What I take from this is structural. These games were level at half-time 44.3% of the time, and of those, 40.9% stayed level to the end. The break is not a resting point in these fixtures. It is where nearly half of them are still undecided, and that is where the value in this market tends to sit.
02How even games shift the grid away from home wins
Here each result in evenly matched games sits against its rate across all 75,046 matches. The biggest move is Home/Home, which falls from 26.0% overall to 19.7% once the favourites are removed. Away/Away goes the other way, from 17.2% to 19.4%, and Draw/Draw rises from 15.7% to 18.1%.
Draw/Away also gains ground, from 10.9% to 12.7%, while Draw/Home slips from 14.9% to 13.4%. Taken together, the two 'same winner both halves' results cover 39.1% of even games against 43.2% overall. Some of that weight moves into the draw columns.

| All matches | Evenly matched | |
|---|---|---|
| Home/Home | 26.0% | 19.7% |
| Draw/Home | 14.9% | 13.4% |
| Away/Home | 2.6% | 2.5% |
| Home/Draw | 5.4% | 5.8% |
| Draw/Draw | 15.7% | 18.1% |
| Away/Draw | 5.1% | 5.9% |
| Home/Away | 2.2% | 2.4% |
| Draw/Away | 10.9% | 12.7% |
| Away/Away | 17.2% | 19.4% |
This is the chart I would show anyone who backs the home side by habit. Take away the price gap and home advantage stops carrying a match through both halves, while away sides that lead at the break hold on about as often as the hosts do.
03Break-even prices for every result without a clear favourite
The table turns each frequency into a fair price, the decimal odds at which a bet breaks even with no margin. In even games Draw/Draw is fair at 5.52, against 6.37 across all matches. Home/Home moves the other way, from 3.85 overall to 5.08, so the result most people reach for first deserves a much bigger price here.
Away/Away is fair at 5.14 and Draw/Away at 7.84, both shorter than their all-match figures of 5.81 and 9.19. The reversals sit at 40.39 for Away/Home and 41.30 for Home/Away.
| HT/FT | Even games | Fair odds | All matches | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home/Home | 19.7% | 5.08 | 26.0% | 3.85 |
| Away/Away | 19.4% | 5.14 | 17.2% | 5.81 |
| Draw/Draw | 18.1% | 5.52 | 15.7% | 6.37 |
| Draw/Home | 13.4% | 7.45 | 14.9% | 6.71 |
| Draw/Away | 12.7% | 7.84 | 10.9% | 9.19 |
| Away/Draw | 5.9% | 16.94 | 5.1% | 19.51 |
| Home/Draw | 5.8% | 17.24 | 5.4% | 18.66 |
| Away/Home | 2.5% | 40.39 | 2.6% | 37.88 |
| Home/Away | 2.4% | 41.30 | 2.2% | 45.73 |
My main caveat: HT/FT carries a far heavier bookmaker margin than the match result market, so these fair prices are a floor rather than a quote. Over a few hundred bets your returns can drift a long way from these rates, and the sample leans towards lower divisions, where even games are more common.
HT/FT checklist
- Confirm the match is even. Only use these rates when both sides are priced at 2.30 or longer. That covered 27.0% of matches, and outside that group Home/Home behaves very differently at 26.0%.
- Price Draw/Draw against 5.52. Draw/Draw lands 18.1% in even games, so anything at or below 5.52 offers no edge once the margin is counted. Look for a price comfortably above that floor.
- Respect the half-time hinge. Even games were level at the break 44.3% of the time, and Draw/Home plus Draw/Away together beat Draw/Draw. Ask which side finishes stronger before you back a level first half.
Quick answers
What is the most common HT/FT result when there is no clear favourite?
Home/Home, at 19.7% of evenly matched games. Away/Away at 19.4% and Draw/Draw at 18.1% are close enough that none of the three stands out as the clear pick.
What are fair odds for Draw/Draw in an evenly matched game?
The break-even price is 5.52, based on Draw/Draw landing 18.1% of the time. Because HT/FT margins are large, you would want a quoted price clearly above that.
How often does a half-time lead get completely reversed?
Rarely. In evenly matched games Home/Away landed 2.4% and Away/Home 2.5%, which gives fair odds of 41.30 and 40.39.
